YOUNG-FARMER-RUN, SMALL SCALE, DIVERSE FARM IN THE HEART OF THE PUGET SOUND

and here come the seed catalogs

The past two weeks I’ve assumed the desk job at the farm, calculating our quarter state taxes for last year, figuring our expenses & income, preparing to pay personal taxes in a world away from 1040EZ. I’ve also managed to do a little dreaming too, by way of fantasizing over catalogs & ordering seeds. Invariably, the mailbox in December & January is filled with an assortment of seed & grower catalogs. Some I’ve ordered, some not. But the stack of them just screams to be looked through, for in it you will find the dreams of summer & promises of infinite bounty. So I indulge in the “vegetable porn,” if you will. Up close & personal shots of glistening peppers, dew-dripping lettuces, & dreaming looking brassica plants. Even the cover crop photos are stunning to look at.

And so, even with an unsure season ahead of me, I attempt to make plans for a successful one. I am getting excited again about being outside, or at least forgetful of how tired I was in November. I do plan on keeping work with Greg & Potential Energy. I love working with him & I do believe it helps to serve my personal long term goals of constantly learning & broadening my experiences. Not to mention that I’m able to save up some money in the process.

So part time farm it will have to be for now. I am getting excited at the thought of opening packages of seed orders, and that feels good.
